Meles Zenawi defends Ethiopia's security investment
Thirty nine fighter jet pilots and 201 technicians graduated in Ethiopia, the biggest number ever to graduate in one go, as the country works on strengthening its air force.

Handing awards to the 39 pilots and 201 technicians at an air force base in Debre Zeit, 45 kilometres east of Addis Ababa, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, vowed to strengthen the country's air force.

Meles said building the capacity of the national defence forces was as a result of the country's desire for peace.

"Activities aimed at building the capacity of our defence force will continue as the intention emanates from the nation's firm desire for peace and development," Meles said.

Meles Zenawi defends Ethiopia's security investment"To this end trainings will continue in a more strengthened manner to produce disciplined military personnel who would undertake their mission with courage."

He said missions geared towards the defence of the nation from anti-peace forces have been successfully accomplished. He stopped short of giving details of the missions.

"Our air force uses state of the art fighter airplanes and needs to be strengthened to meet the ever growing standards in the sector," added Meles.

Ethiopia's defence budget has been on the rise in the past few years, reaching US$350 million from the country's US$7 billion budget.

A few weeks ago Ethiopian defence forces attacked military bases in Eritrea, after accusing its neighbour of arming and training insurgents.

Last March, Ethiopia blamed Eritrea for the killing of five European tourists in the Afar region of Ethiopia, bordering Eritrea. Two Germans tourists were also abducted during the attack but were later released.

A rebel group, which claims to operate in the Eritrean territory, took responsibility for the abduction, saying that the five were killed in cross fire clashes between them and Ethiopian troops.

Eritrea denies any involvement in the attacks.

Since the incident, tensions have been high around the border areas of the two countries.

Ethiopia: Determined Leikun Out On Bail, Still Fighting Conviction

BY ABDI TSEGAYE, 8 APRIL 2012

Once again, Leikun Brehanu, 65, former president of Awash International Bank (AIB), is out of jail against a 50,000 Br bond, approved by the Cassation Bench of the Federal Supreme Court. Justices at the Cassation Bench granted his release on Wednesday, April 4, 2012. He was released at the eleventh hour the following day.
Before the interruption of the execution of bail, Leikun was behind bars at the Addis Abeba Prison Centre, on Debre Zeit Road, for more than a month, serving a one year and three-month sentence ordered by the Arada Giorgis Federal First Instance Court.
He was granted bail of a similar amount by the Federal High Court, when he appealed against the ruling by the lower court, along with an application referring to the provisions of a Criminal Code procedure.
A defendant can apply for the suspension of a sentence before or after an appeal hearing begins, the procedure stipulates.
However, he was sent back to jail on February 15, 2012, along with his co-defendants, after the High Court upheld the decision of the lower Court, which sentenced him for misdemeanours in handling letters of credit (LC).
It has not been easy for the veteran banker, who still maintains his innocence.
He has never been accused of disciplinary breaches, let alone been involved in crime to deserve staying behind bars before exhausting all available legal remedies, he argues.
In an application of appeal written to the Cassation Bench of the Supreme Court on February 27, 2012, his lawyer, Amsalu Tsehay, presented his grievance against the decisions of the lower courts, alleging a fundamental error of law. He petitioned the Court to quash their decisions and acquit Leikun from serving the sentence.
The decision of the lower Court, which required him to defend his case, was contrary to the fundamental rights of the accused to be presumed innocent until proven guilty, the lawyer argued in the application of appeal.
Equating the ruling with a reversal of the burden of proof, which is on the shoulders of public prosecutors, the lawyer argued that, The decision demands the accused prove his innocence or show that he has not committed the crime."
"Lower courts have committed a fundamental error of law," the appeal claims.
A graduate of what was then Haile Sellasie I University (now Addis Abeba University) in the 1960s, Leikun started his career in banking with Addis Abeba Bank, which used to be run by Debebe H. Yohannes. He started out as a junior banking officer, before he was promoted to a senior position when the military junta nationalised the Bank and merged it with the state owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), in the late 1970s. Leikun also served as a general manager of the CBE before he left the banking industry in the late 1980s, to join the state owned Agricultural Produces Enterprise.
The advent of the EPRDF government landed him a position as the first governor of the central bank, during the post-Derg era. As a governor, he was to sign the first license given to a private commercial bank in 1996, AIB, where the main promoter, Bulcha Demeksa, was its first president.
Departing from the central bank in 2000, replaced by Dubale Jale, Leikun joined AIB as its second president. During his tenure, he also served the Ethiopian Bankers Association as a chairman, before giving up the position to Brehanu Gateneh, who is also president of United Bank.
During his years at AIB, the Bank prospered, making profits throughout the decade. He also oversaw the completion of an ultramodern headquarters recently opened on Ras Abebe Aregay Street, though it ended up in an unfortunate saga with a flux of legal ramifications.
Pending the final judgment on whether the ruling of the lower courts qualifies as exhibiting a fundamental error of law as claimed by Leikun, the three justices at the Cassation Bench convened a hearing on April 3, 2012. As if to console Leikun and all by his side, the Court decided to pass the hearing of the case to the next Division, which will be presided over by five justices and pronounced an interim measure that resulted in the stay of the execution of the sentence Leikun has been serving.
Following the decision, Leikun's lawyer petitioned the Court to grant his release on bail. In an attempt to prevent irreversible damage, should the Court nullify the previous decisions in the latter hearing, Leikun was granted a conditional release from prison, awaiting the final ruling to be given by the Bench.
It adjourned the commencement of the hearing of the appeal for May 4, 2012.
"I am pleased to be out to spend the holiday with my family," Leikun told Fortune.
Public prosecutors are expected to appear with a written response to the claims of Leikun, next month.

I am an Ethiopian who used to live in Atlanta and moved to my Country 20 years a go. I never knew Elias, but I knew his father, brother and sister. He knows my family in Atlanta and Ethiopia.
I am a self made business man who is very proud of what i am contributing to my country. It is true that I am a business associate of Sheik Mohammed Al AMoudi, Whom I have a very great respect.
Unlike ELias and his hate advocates, sheik Mohammed has been bringing billions of Dollars to Ethiopia and making a very visible change.
He hires over 60000 Ethiopians in Ethiopia. He helps cure 10000 Ethiopians, whom otherwise would have been dead, by spending 100s of millions of dollar.Insulting such a godly person may sound easy to some people, who do not have a fear of god at all. There is no problem hating the current political structure of our country as should be no problem on supporting as well. But why do you hate and make defamation on people who were only successful on their work in Ethiopia. For you guys you can only be good Ethiopians if you promote hate, but if you support the political structure and contribute to the Economic growth of the country, you are public enemy number one.
It is a shame that we do not have good opposition, who only oppose what is needed to be opposed.for Elias to be good Ethiopian, you have to oppose every thing what is being done hear.
I have no business of employment or human traficking.
I run legitimate companies that I own. My companies are engaged in heavy Industries and large scale commercial farms.
None of my companies made any forceful resettlement.getting into foreign employment is not my kind of business. By the way, there are around 200 companies who are doing that none of them belong neither to me nor to the Sheik. You can find about it. But why the lie??? what are you getting for all this lies and have innocent Ethiopians who have no clue what so ever Insult the respected Sheik Mohammed and my self.
Elias, ask your father and sister about me before you create false, story.
Who are you to tell us about Ethiopia when you are a declared fan of the world ruthless leader and Ethiopia’s public enemy number one Essayas Afeworki???
and those of you who are trying to sound like a hero and wants to kill me. I am very easy to find, come to Addis Ababa and ask about me or come and see me in Atlanta in mid April, when i visit my family.
I always go to Saudi Arabia to perform my religious duty but I do not have no business of sending labor. Elias does knows that, yet “Awko yetgnan sew bikesekisut waga yelewum.
Instead of talking crap on the net, i suggest you guys come and contribute to make a change in the rising Ethiopia. I do not advocate migration, i believe every Ethiopian could make his dream come true if he has a fear of god and work hard.
By the way, i will make sure that i get justice for the defamation you incurred me.
Prosperity to Ethiopia and god bless Shek Mohammed and people like him who are working to make change in Ethiopia.
